A part of a historic and classic office building in central Tokyo has been refurbished into a shared space. Completed in 1978, this office building has 27 floors in total. Since many tenants are currently occupying the building, the architects planned to modernize it with minimal construction work.
To create a new work lounge, the existing walls are covered with textiles. The classic circular motifs were already scattered throughout the building, and the architects wanted to use this circular motif in textiles as well.
The most common pattern that comes to mind with circles is polka dots. But I didn't want to make it a simple polka dot pattern. I want the circle to have meaning. What came to my mind was a theatrical curtain that lifts curtain in a semicircle. The curtain can be lifted only where it is needed not to disturb doorways and switches.By printing a random large circular motif and lifting it up into a circular shape, we aimed for double circle effects. Combined with the ceiling that vaguely reflects the pattern, a kind of another world has been completed.
